How it works

How the Step-Up SIP Calculator works

Each year the monthly SIP is increased by the step-up percentage you enter. Monthly contributions then compound using the assumed annual return.

Important assumptions

  • Results are estimates based on the values you enter.
  • Rates and returns are assumed for the projection period and may change in real life.
  • Taxes, fees, market conditions and provider-specific rules may affect actual outcomes.

What Is a Step-Up SIP Calculator?

A Step-Up SIP increases your monthly SIP contribution at a chosen percentage each year instead of keeping the contribution fixed. This can help model a plan where the amount invested rises as your income or savings capacity changes.

For example, with a ₹1,000 starting SIP and a 10% annual step-up, the monthly contribution becomes ₹1,100 in year 2, ₹1,210 in year 3 and ₹1,331 in year 4. The calculator applies the increase automatically each year.

How Does a Step-Up SIP Work?

Enter your starting monthly SIP, expected annual return, investment period and annual step-up percentage. The calculator keeps the monthly contribution unchanged within each year, then increases it at the start of the next year.

The projection separates the amount you contribute from the estimated growth. This makes it easier to see how higher yearly contributions affect the final corpus.

Step-Up SIP vs regular SIP

A regular SIP keeps the monthly contribution constant unless you change it. A Step-Up SIP increases that contribution at a predefined annual rate. For the same return and period, increasing contributions generally leads to a larger invested amount and can produce a larger projected corpus, but it also requires a higher cash contribution over time.

Use the calculator to compare the outcome under different step-up percentages rather than assuming that a higher contribution is automatically suitable for your budget.

Step-Up SIP calculator formula

The calculator models monthly compounding and an annual contribution increase. If Bₘ is the balance after month m, r is the assumed monthly return, and Pᵧ is the monthly SIP for that year, the calculation is Bₘ = Bₘ₋₁ × (1 + r) + Pᵧ.

The monthly contribution for year y is Pᵧ = P₀ × (1 + s)^(y−1), where P₀ is the starting monthly SIP and s is the annual step-up rate. These are planning assumptions, not guaranteed investment returns.

Step-Up SIP Example: 10% Annual Increase

As an illustration, suppose the starting SIP is ₹1,000 per month, the assumed return is 12% a year, the period is 5 years and the annual step-up is 10%. Under those assumptions, the total contributions are about ₹73,261 and the projected corpus is about ₹97,482.

The same assumptions with a ₹2,000 starting SIP scale the contribution and projected values accordingly. These examples are mathematical scenarios, not investment recommendations; change the inputs above to match your own plan.

Step-Up SIP and inflation

Inflation matters because the same rupee amount may buy less in the future. Turn on the inflation-adjusted view to convert the projected corpus into today's purchasing power using the annual inflation rate you enter.

The inflation adjustment does not change the nominal investment projection or guarantee a real return. It is a planning view that helps compare future amounts with today's purchasing power.

How Much Will My SIP Increase Each Year?

Yes. The year-by-year projection below the calculator shows the monthly SIP amount used for each year, along with cumulative investment, projected corpus and estimated gains. For a 10% step-up, a ₹10,000 monthly SIP becomes ₹11,000 in year 2, ₹12,100 in year 3 and ₹13,310 in year 4. This helps you see exactly how the annual increase changes your required contribution.

Frequently asked questions

Step-Up SIP Calculator FAQs

Clear answers to common questions about annual SIP increases, formulas, yearly contributions and return assumptions.

What is a Step-Up SIP calculator?

It estimates the projected corpus when your monthly SIP increases by a chosen percentage each year. Enter the starting SIP, return assumption, period and annual step-up to see the effect on contributions and projected growth.

How does a 10% Step-Up SIP work?

A 10% annual step-up means each year's monthly SIP is 10% higher than the previous year's amount. For example, ₹1,000 per month becomes ₹1,100, then ₹1,210, then ₹1,331.

How can I increase my SIP every year?

Choose an annual step-up percentage that fits your expected savings capacity. The calculator lets you test different percentages and see how the required monthly contribution changes year by year.

How does the annual increase affect the final corpus?

A higher step-up increases the amount invested over time. If the return assumption and period stay the same, the model will generally show higher cumulative investment and a higher projected corpus.

What happens if I stop increasing my SIP?

If your future contributions stay flat instead of increasing, the result will differ from the selected step-up scenario. Re-enter a lower step-up rate or use the regular SIP calculator to model a fixed contribution.

How does the Step-Up SIP calculator adjust for inflation?

Turn on the inflation-adjusted view and enter an annual inflation rate. The calculator discounts the projected corpus by cumulative inflation to express the future amount in today's purchasing power.

How does a Step-Up SIP work?

The monthly SIP stays at the selected amount during each year and then increases by the annual step-up percentage for the next year. The calculator applies the assumed return to the monthly contributions over the selected period.

What is the Step-Up SIP formula?

The calculator uses monthly compounding and increases the monthly contribution once per year. If B is the balance, r is the monthly return and P is the monthly contribution for that year, each month is modeled as Bₘ = Bₘ₋₁ × (1 + r) + P.

How is Step-Up SIP different from regular SIP?

A regular SIP keeps the monthly contribution constant unless you change it. A Step-Up SIP increases the contribution automatically in the model at the annual step-up rate you enter.

Can I see my yearly SIP amount?

Yes. The calculator's year-by-year projection shows the monthly SIP amount used in each year, along with cumulative investment and projected corpus.

Are Step-Up SIP returns guaranteed?

No. The return is an assumption used for the projection. Market-linked investment returns can vary, so compare multiple assumptions instead of treating the projected corpus as guaranteed.

What inflation rate should I use in a Step-Up SIP calculator?

Use an inflation assumption that fits your planning scenario and compare more than one rate. The calculator treats the rate as an assumption, not a forecast or guarantee.
