Which Mutual Fund Is Suitable for SWP? How to Evaluate a Fund
There is no single mutual fund that is universally suitable for every SWP. The evaluation starts with the purpose of the money, the time horizon and the amount that needs to be withdrawn.
Factors to compare when choosing a fund for SWP
- Risk profile: understand how much the fund can fluctuate.
- Asset mix: check whether the portfolio matches the period for which you expect to withdraw.
- Liquidity: make sure units can be redeemed under the scheme's current rules when you need cash.
- Costs: review expense ratio, exit-load rules and other applicable costs.
- Tax treatment: understand how redemptions from that category are taxed.
- Withdrawal sensitivity: test how the corpus behaves if returns are lower than expected.
Past return is not the same as an SWP guarantee
Historical performance does not guarantee the return that will be available during your withdrawal period. SEBI's investor material explains that mutual funds involve market risk and that investors should read scheme information and monitor their investments.
Use the calculator before settling on a withdrawal
First define the cash-flow requirement. Then test that withdrawal against different return assumptions and time horizons using the SWP Calculator. This keeps the withdrawal question separate from the fund-selection question.
