SWP Example: What Could ₹25 Lakh Support?

Consider a hypothetical starting corpus of ₹25,00,000. The result of an SWP projection depends on the withdrawal amount, assumed return, duration and whether withdrawals increase over time.

Important: the numbers below are an educational illustration. They are not a recommendation that ₹25 lakh can safely support a particular withdrawal amount.

Example assumptions

  • Starting corpus: ₹25,00,000
  • Monthly withdrawal: ₹15,000
  • Expected annual return: 8%
  • Duration: 20 years
  • Annual withdrawal increase: 0% for the base example

These figures are deliberately presented as assumptions rather than a promise of what an investment will earn. Changing any one of them can materially change the projection.

What happens if the withdrawal rises?

Increasing the monthly withdrawal each year means more money is removed from the corpus over time. Comparing a fixed withdrawal with a 5% annual increase can help illustrate the effect of rising spending.

For example, ₹15,000 per month becomes ₹15,750 after a 5% first-year increase and ₹16,537.50 after another 5% increase. The scheduled amount continues to rise even if the underlying investment does not.

What happens if returns are different?

A projection using 6% and another using 10% will produce different outcomes, but neither should be treated as a forecast. Actual investment returns can be positive or negative and vary from year to year.

What if the withdrawal period is shorter?

A shorter planning period means fewer withdrawals are modelled. That can leave a larger projected ending balance, but it does not mean the investment will necessarily perform better. It simply changes the period being tested.

What should you compare?

Rather than asking whether ₹25 lakh is “enough” in isolation, compare several combinations of withdrawal amount, return assumption, duration and annual increase. This gives a clearer picture of how sensitive the result is to the assumptions you control.

Questions to ask before using a projection

  • Does the withdrawal match my actual spending requirement?
  • Have I considered that expenses may rise over time?
  • Have I tested more than one return assumption?
  • Have I considered taxes, fees and the type of investment involved?
  • Am I treating the result as an estimate rather than a guaranteed outcome?
